Tribute to design visionary Karel Martens. Involved typesetting essay excerpts, creating a unique typeface, and blending Martens’ style with my own.
Project Overview
The first assignment of Design Hero -- a semester-long project exploring the work of a prolific designer (currently in progress)! This poster is a deep dive into Karel Martens’ design style and creative ethos, informed by extensive research and book-browsing. To pay homage to Martens’ unique line-printing techniques, I created a custom typeface by arranging individual lines of varying thickness on a grid.I reference several of Martens’ motifs in my poster: the multicolored letter layers is inspired by the repetition and layering in his print work, while the background is based on the old museum cards he frequently prints on.
