OrcA GRAPHICS
SPRING 2024
SOLO PROJECT
ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

Poster and GIF representing the form, personality, and habitat of the Orca Whale. An exercise in simplifying the form of an animal, creating compositional depth, and smoothly animating the form of an Orca.

Orca Poster

Project Overview

For this project, I was assigned to select an animal native to the region I grew up in, then combine text and visuals to tell this animal’s story. As a proud Seattleite, the Orca was an easy choice. After extensive research and paper drafting, the final composition would be created in Adobe Illustrator using a limited six-color palette. In my design, I wanted to showcase the natural features of Pacific Northwest, as well as Orca’s playful, social nature. I created a dynamic scene of Orcas leaping from crashing waves, frolicking with their pod.

Orca Gif

Project Overview

For this assignment, I was tasked with translating my static Orca Poster into a looping 2D animation while preserving the original aesthetic and narrative. To adhere to the playful story, I animated two orcas swimming below the surface, followed by an upward pan to a shoreline landscape and a midair orca criss-cross. I included wave-like kinetic type.
I created my animation elements seperately, then composed each individual frame in Illustrator - 74 frames total.
